The Well: A Story of Love, Death & Real Life in the Seminal Online Community ReviewFirst, I should note that I'm a long-time Well member (albeit mostly as an observer, not an active participant) which may color my perceptions. Nevertheless, I tried to read this more-or-less objectively, as a book I might give to friends that would convey exactly why it is that I am a member.
Well, it passes that test easily: in its relatively brief length, "The Well" succinctly and sensitively chronicles the odd birth, growing pains, and interpersonal dynamics that make The Well the unique online community that it is.
I'm buying copies for my ex-girlfriend, who complained that I spent too much time at the computer, and for a friend who, years ago, acidly commented, "Why that's amazing, you've gone a whole thirty minutes without mentioning The Well!"
Maybe this book can explain the things I couldn't. Highly recomended for those who want to understand the possiblities of virtual communities. The Well: A Story of Love, Death & Real Life in the Seminal Online Community Overview

Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature ReviewThank god for the current trend toward the generalization of textbooks.
I don't mean generalization in the sense of broadening or watering-down of subject matter, but rather in writing: many more texts in relatively technical fields are being written so that they can be appreciated interdisciplinarily, but professionals in related and sometimes even slightly-unrelated fields, and other folks who may simply be interested in the topic. It's good marketing, too, of course - it opens up much larger markets both academically and professionally, and as long as the book contains enough authority to convince instructors and professionals to purchase (or trust) it, it's a win-win situation for the publisher and author as well as the audience.
Douglas Farr's Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature (Wiley, 2008; foreword by Andres Duany) falls into the category of win-win for everyone. A very well-illustrated primer on the subject, it appeals to planners, architects, landscape designers, engineers and other folks interested in integrating their work into the larger natural environment.
Duany - the great architect and urban planner whose work with Arquitectonica shaped what we think of as "Florida modern" and whose current firm, DPZ, has become a de facto leader of the New Urbanism movement - suggests that the problem with such books is often that they most often fail to engage the reader in any kind of dialogue by simply being too technical, or by failing to instruct by simply being too exhortative and dogmatic. Luckily, Farr gives more than enough data and instruction in the dozen linked essays and case studies to instruct - but never loses sight of the fact that he's along with us for the ride, not talking at us but at our elbow, learning along with us, sharing both successes and failures and an honest interest in building communities that complement, rather than exclude, the unmanufactured world.
There's so much more here than just part one's "Case for Sustainable Urbanism." Other sections focus on the type of leadership and communication strategies most helpful in implementing both small and large-scale projects; technical tools and special techniques for community involvement are also explored extensively. Other chapters discuss the role of density, how to approach corridor situations, diagramming neighborhoods and the various types of housing that complement specific types of neighborhoods, "biophilia" - including everything from designing walkable streets to integrating wastewater management - and extensive essays on high-performance buildings and infrastructure. The last section of the book is given over to case studies, which both illustrate the preceding chapters with easy-to-understand real-world examples of sustainable success stories & offer solutions for those of us slogging through similar projects or at an impasse with a particular audience.
I recommend the book without hesitation to any planner interested in integrating sustainable projects in urban infill or exurban growth environments, as well as other aficionados of new urbanism topics. It's an entertaining read AND a necessary reference; it will replace several books on the already-overloaded shelves of a number of planners I know.Sustainable Urbanism: Urban Design With Nature Overview

Church Turned Inside Out: A Guide for Designers, Refiners, and Re-Aligners (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) ReviewMy family and I live in a city where the church cannot keep up with our life or our urban pace. This book addresses why so many outsiders see the church as a bounded institution and insiders feel over taxed and detached from the world. So much of our life and resources are drained by these struggling and demanding models. Could it be that much of our problem is in our design and the loss of our center? Linda and Allan make the case that we need to design unique models for cities, people groups, and so many new realities. The pages of this book are filled with theology, history and new metaphors to consider. There is no "how to" or "silver bullet", the authors call Pastors and leaders to invite designers and re aligners to the party if they are to transition existing churches and establish new churches that are fruit bearing and release the fragrance of Christ in this amazing new world. I believe this is a pioneer book, moving us away from the dissatisfied and narcissistic dialogues. It is not a fearful and deconstructive read but one filled with resolve and hope. The authors write from practice. They are friends and peers, but also unique in their exchange. Thank you Linda and Allen for inspiring the designer in me.Church Turned Inside Out: A Guide for Designers, Refiners, and Re-Aligners (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) Overview

The Global Brain: Your Roadmap for Innovating Faster and Smarter in a Networked World Review
With regard to the term Global Brain, Satish Nambisan and Mohanbir Sawhney refer to "the diverse set of external players that constitute the innovation network for the companies" discussed in this book such as P&G, IBM, Boeing, and Apple]; and Network-centric innovation to describe "the underlying principles of collaborative innovation in such a context." They add that a common theme n their research was their interest in the concept of distributed innovation. That is, "innovation initiatives that are spread across a diverse network of partners." Their vehicle for exploration was the Kellogg Innovation Network (KIN) -- "a forum for senior innovation managers of large companies - affiliated with the Center for Research in Information and Technology that [Sawhney] directs at the Kellogg School of Management. The KIN is an excellent example of the power of the Global Brain in action."
Nambisan and Sawhney carefully organize and present their material within five Parts. During the course of their narrative, they respond to questions such as these:
Why should companies seek innovation externally during a transition from being firm-centric and network-centric?
What are the core principles of network-centric innovation?
What are the four basic models and key elements of network-centric innovation?
How to develop a contingent framework that maps the context for innovation?
Which guidelines can help managers to evaluate the different types of opportunities that are most appropriate to their organization's resources, capabilities, and strategies?
What are the implications of network-centric innovation for the emerging economies?
What are the common trends in various countries' emerging economies?
How to analyze the potential for companies in these countries to "plug into the global brain"?
I especially appreciate Nambisan and Sawhney's provision of dozens of real-world examples that illustrate their key points. For example, in Chapter 5 they examine what they characterize as "the orchestra model" that can take two quite different forms: The Orchestra-Integrator model and the Orchestra-Platform model. With regard to the former, they examine Boeing's 787 Dreamliner project and include Table 5.1 (Pages 96-97) that portrays the project's specific elements of network-centric innovation. With regard to the Orchestra-Platform Model, they examine Salesforce.com and the AppExchange Forum. Figure 5.3 (Pages 110-111) illustrates the elements of its network-centric innovation.
"In both the Integrator and Platform model, the innovation architecture defined by the dominant firm becomes the context for the network partners to innovate...In both cases, the tricky part is to bring together a diverse set of capable partners who are sufficiently committed to the innovation architecture and to orchestrate their activities in a manner that leads to outcomes that are beneficial to all the network members."
After completing their exploration of the Global Brain and "painting a picture of the landscape of network-centric innovation," Nambisan and Sawhney urge their reader to chart her or his own organization's "journey" to position it as a player in the same rich and diverse landscape. "We have a simple mantra for [achieving] this: Think BIG, Start SMALL, Scale FAST."
Bon voyage! The Global Brain: Your Roadmap for Innovating Faster and Smarter in a Networked World Overview

The Externally Focused Quest: Becoming the Best Church for the Community (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) ReviewOver time it is very easy for a church to become so focused on itself that it forgets to reach out to the community. Having led a church that was over 150 years old, I learned this first hand. But if a church will just begin to touch its community by meeting some felt need, the community will begin to respond. The more the community responds, the more needs the church finds to meet. It becomes a cycle of health instead of a long slow decline.
This book gives both real life examples and philosophical concepts to help a church make the transition from inward focused to outward focused. I would strongly urge any pastor to read this, but especially pastors who are serving congregations that have been in existance for 50 years or more.
Helping a church become externally focused is not easy, but it can be done. The Externally Focused Quest: Becoming the Best Church for the Community (Jossey-Bass Leadership Network Series) Overview

Cultivating Communities of Practice ReviewWenger, McDermott and Snyder draw on the past to describe the usefulness of a community of practice. In the Stone Age knowledge was passed on to others while people gathered around a fire and discussed hunting strategies. A community of practice is a group of people who may be trying to solve a problem and who interact about a topic in order to deepen their knowledge. The aim is shared insight and information. The authors write that in the time of ancient Rome corporations of metalworkers, potters, masons and craftsmen formed communities with a combined business and social function. Moreover, in the Middle Ages artisans formed guilds as a way to share knowledge and experiences. Therefore, the authors argue that community as a basis for knowledge creation and management has a long historical tradition.
Wenger, McDermott and Snyder believe that knowledge management needs to become more systematic and deliberate. The authors believe in the collective nature of knowledge, which involves every person contributing their perspective of a problem. A Community of Practice (CoP) allows for the connection of isolated pockets of expertise across an organization. The CoP consists of a domain of knowledge, a community of people and the shared practice they are developing. The community environment allows for interactions, relationships, sharing of ideas and the opportunity to ask difficult questions. The purpose of the CoP is to create, expand and exchange knowledge. The authors believe that a large number of CoP members rarely participate. Instead they watch the interaction and learn from the discussions that occur, learning from them. The authors believe that the most valuable activities consist of informal discussions that occur between members to solve a particular problem. A case study given is that of Shell, which has created CoP's around particular technical topics.
Wenger, McDermott and Snyder go into detail over how a CoP functions. At the beginning it is important to find common ground between all the members of the community. Members need to find out if they share similar problems and passions with one another. The authors believe a variety of communities exist: help communities, best practice, innovation and knowledge stewarding communities. Usually a community coordinator is needed who identifies important issues and plans events. The author's method for assessing the performance of a community consists of asking the questions: What did the community do? What knowledge did they produce? And how were those applied to get results?
All the characteristics mentioned, although are only intended by the authors to represent a CoP, share similarities with a virtual community. In fact the authors believe that Internet technology such as asynchronous threaded discussions can be used for distributed communities of practice. In fact some CoP's have websites where members have their pictures and biographical information on the site. However, Wenger, McDermott and Snyder make no connection between a community of practice and a virtual community. In fact they don't mention the two being related in any way at all, despite the dynamics appearing to be very similar. At the end of the book this omission seems very obvious given the incredible growth of virtual community at eBay and Amazon.Cultivating Communities of Practice Overview

Smart Start-Ups: How Entrepreneurs and Corporations Can Profit by Starting Online Communities ReviewThe whole first part of the book is basically built around one idea: mobile phone based "communities" & social networks. He keeps reiterating the same point in different ways while promising to explain how to do any of the stuff he talks about in later chapters. The first hundred pages come off sounding like a commercial for the author's other chapters or other projects.
By the time you actually get to the later chapters you'll find them very weak on any substantively useful information or action steps to emulate. The whole project just seems rushed to capitalize on current Web trends and makes a hypothesis of dubious relevance.Smart Start-Ups: How Entrepreneurs and Corporations Can Profit by Starting Online Communities Overview

The Hyper-Social Organization: Eclipse Your Competition by Leveraging Social Media ReviewThe Hyper-Social Organization is a book that should be on every executive's desk. All entrepreneurs and small business owners should have a copy - several copies; one for them, and some to share. It's that good.
I've been in social media for 8 years - almost a lifetime, online. My focus has always been on "the people"...not the technology or the tools. Remember when business was all about "the people"...back in the last century? Despite great advances in technology, despite the always on, immediate real-time communication tools that dominate our world today, the only thing that really matters, in life and business, is the people.
The authors of this book promote the concept of the "tribe" which I can't get my head around - not the concept, the word. Not at all sure why that word resonates with people, but it does. I prefer neighborhood - I hang out in my neighborhood, whether that's Facebook online, or Twitter, or my blog; whether that's the community center where I live, or a coffee shop across town, or a business event across the country. It's my neighborhood - friendly, open, approachable, and comforting.
Tribe or neighborhood, the fact is - humans are hard-wired to be social. This book gets to the "heart" of that. Yes, the "heart" of it. Not the 'brain' which is what all the other social media books seem to want to tout - brain thinking, as in, why do people buy? Why do people congregate? What makes people tick? It's heart, not brain.
I'm so fascinated by the examples in this book, and I'm only half-way through. The companies that are able to embrace their customers (and employees, one hopes) as people first, and buyers, next, are the ones who will succeed in being hyper-social. It's not about you...it's about me. It's about my "tribe" or "neighborhood" and how we act together. It's about understanding people and heart, first. Then, allowing us to be part of what you're creating.
Wow... what a concept.
I can't wait to finish this book, but it's not one you should be reading at one sitting, or even over the weekend. Take your time. Underline, highlight... bookmark. You'll want to go back and re-read, then make notes. Put down whatever else you're reading today, and pick up this book. It's that good. The Hyper-Social Organization: Eclipse Your Competition by Leveraging Social Media Overview

No Bullshit Social Media: The All-Business, No-Hype Guide to Social Media Marketing ReviewNo B**S Social Media, a Recommended Book (Four Stars)
No B**S Social Media, Review No B**S? Really! No B**S Social Media at least has a catchy title. It certainly got my attention and hope that this would be one of the better books on Social Media Marketing. I teach Social Media Marketing in San Francisco and online (just Google `Jason McDonald' or click on my profile to find me), and so I am always on the look out for new insights into the emerging world of SMM.
Bottom line: four stars
I recommend the book as a good, fresh intro to Social Media Marketing.
The book's strength: a detailed, high level overview to WHY Social Media matters.
The book's weakness: lack of how-to-, step-by-step detail.
No B**S Social Media is 90% a conceptual book, and only 10% a practical how-to guide. The discussions of ROI / Metrics, review marketing, and how to organize your social media team in a larger company are all quite good. If you have an established product, more than ten employees, and are looking for a good airplane read on social media, this is a good book for you. If you are a start up, a single employee company, or are looking for a detailed practical manual on Social Media Marketing, you are better served by Social Media for Dummies.
Be Afraid, Be Very Afraid of Social Media
Not surprisingly, given its brash title, the book's tone is no nonsense. One major theme in the book is: Be afraid, be very afraid! Be afraid, first of all, that the Social Media Revolution is here, and be afraid that you - Mr. or Ms. Marketing - do not understand it. Your company will be doomed as will you - so you had better start paying attention! Do I agree with this statement? Absolutely. Do I agree with the tone: not at all.
Should you be afraid of Social Media? If you are a large company like Nestle or United Airlines, there is certainly reason to fear the viral attack campaign of your Facebook page, or the viral video "United Breaks Guitars." For most businesses, however, the worst that happens is a) the unhappy customer review on Yelp or Google Places, or b) a complete lack of interest by your customers in your products.
Very few of us will experience a viral video assault like "United Breaks Guitars," but many of us will experience the "b" option - difficulty getting our customers to truly be excited about our brand, our products, and our news. Fear is the wrong metaphor, in my view.
Attitude is everything I believe, so despite what No B**S says, I encourage you to be open minded about Social Media rather than fearful. Expect some direct insights from your customers, good or bad, but see this revolution for what it is: an amazing, fun marketing opportunity to get to know your customers regardless of the limits of time or space. Experiment. Be innovative. For many small businesses, Social Media will start and end with Google Places and Yelp. That's OK. It all depends on what YOU make what works for YOUR BUSINESS.
My take, therefore, is 1) don't be afraid you will be left behind, there is still plenty of time to get started in Social Media Marketing. But certainly take the plunge now and start educating yourself and your company, and 2) don't worry too much about the high-visibility attacks such as those against Nestle or United Airlines. Unless you are a major brand, those viral social media messages are very rare indeed, and 3) look for focused opportunities rather than trying to do everything at once. Nigerian proverb: man who goes after two mice, catches none. So, focus, focus, focus on just the best social media opportunities, unique to your business.
Social Media Opportunities - Reviews and Review-based SMM
For many businesses the strongest Social Media Opportunity is in the review space. Fortunately this is the best part of the book - its discussion of reviews and eWOM (electronic word-of mouth). Nowadays, many customers may base their decision to engage with you on reviews posted about your company or products on sites such as ePinions.com, Amazon.com, Yelp.com, and other platforms. Small businesses like roofing companies or attorneys, in particular, are being reviewed heavily on Yelp and Google Places.
Do reviews matter to your business?
If so, what is your strategy to encourage them?
If so, what is your strategy to monitor and respond to them - good, bad, and ugly?
With respect to reviews, the authors make the obvious but necessary point that people often do NOT believe advertising but they WILL believe the reviews of total strangers. Looking for a new Bar-be-que restaurant in Dallas? Turn to Yelp or Google Places, read reviews, go to restaurant. Ready to buy a new book on Amazon? Read the reviews, like the reviewer, buy the book. Review marketing is big, and getting bigger. Reviews matter. Do you lack a review strategy? Then be afraid, be very afraid.
Here, however, is where the book falls down. We are given no easy Web index of sites that have reviews, tools or tips to encourage reviews - so we know that reviews are important, but we aren't really taught how to cultivate them, at either the conceptual or practical level. Like so many books in this sector, the book reads too much like a novel and not enough like a workbook. As someone who teaches Social Media Marketing, I know from my students that what they want are practical, step-by-step directions on issues like how to encourage reviews. In this regard, No B**S Social Media disappoints. It even lacks an appendix of great websites, or power tools for Social Media - items that in this Internet age should certainly be part of any book on the topic.
Conclusion
There's theory and then there's practice. A truly excellent Social Media Marketing book would have booth - a discussion of why reviews matter, and also a step-by-step guide to how to encourage reviews. No B**S Social Media is more theory than practice, but it's still a good book. Buying it, reading it, and most of all - beginning to embrace Social Media - is a start. That's no B**S.No Bullshit Social Media: The All-Business, No-Hype Guide to Social Media Marketing Overview

Social Nation: How to Harness the Power of Social Media to Attract Customers, Motivate Employees, and Grow Your Business ReviewStarting with a real-life and enlightening exchange with is wife, Barry Libert begins to open our eyes to how we must take advantage of everything our new Social Nation has to offer. Libert seems to have written Social Nation so that we all can save the many good things about being in charge of a small company, of being an employee of a Fortune 500 company, of being a customer of the hardware store down the street.
Libert, has managed to write a business book which is truly for any adult, be they an employer, employee, or customer. The book has an excitement to it, due to how Mr. Libert has written at a pace which makes me and others feel that this is the time to fix some of the many things that were so great about American capitalism.
Today, if we did an impromptu interview out on the street, I would bet it would be hard to find customers who felt that the places they shopped actually even knew if they were a customer; and men and women who work in all sorts of buildings and industries would tell us that they have never had a real discussion with their manager or his manager together with other employees. Many would tell us that the "suggestion box," now seen only in movies before the 1970's, has been broken and out of service for the entire time they have worked at their job.
It is true that there have been "scares" about us losing how to really communicate with each other. Think of the television, then the cell phone, and ..... Libert spins no scare tactics in Social Nation. He has the facts. He cuts to the truth. For a number of decades businesses have cared more about assets and cash on hand, "than they did people and their relationships." Well, now, with the Internet and the Web, companies, employees and their clients can regain what made capitalism in the United States so great, we were all part of it. We can be again. Companies can offer clients their own Web sites which would contain information about the products they have purchased, and, the company would offer specials directly to the customer and not through a blaring commercial. This would all be done on an opt in basis, no push advertising. The customer receives a genuine invitation to be a part of that business.
Better yet, as Social Nation points out, employees and employers can start rebuilding, or for most of us, start from scratch, the building of trust, commitment, and loyalty. Social Nation illustrates that what our kids take as just part of life, business can use to listen to employees and what they have to say, the good, the bad, the great suggestion which may be a company's best selling product the next year. All of it is possible. Just as important, the employees will feel part of something, because they are part of something. Something that Libert's Social Nation makes many of us yearn for, only now, it can be revived and made even better. That is how American business works.
At a time when many of us are looking for things to be hopeful about, Barry Libert bring us a gift of hope and of success, in Social Nation.Social Nation: How to Harness the Power of Social Media to Attract Customers, Motivate Employees, and Grow Your Business Overview
