Identity and Control: How Social Formations Emerge (Second Edition) ReviewThis book is only for academics.
I have tried to read the 1st edition several times, but it is a full time job for a couple of weeks. Really. The author is intelligent and wellknown in the field, so it might be worth it. But as a prospective buyer of the book you should know what to expect.
I bought the 2nd edition hoping the language would be clearer. It might be slighly clearer, but there are also changes that add further confusion. It is not clear when the author has changed his opinion from the 1st edition or when he just tries to express himself differently. This point is however only relevant for those who have tried to get through the 1st edition.
With time this book might become a sociology classic, but not before we start seeing other work directly interpreting what is being said in the book. That has not really happened yet. Azarian The General Sociology of Harrison C. White: Chaos and Order in Networks has written one interpretation, but it only deals with a few aspects of this book.Identity and Control: How Social Formations Emerge (Second Edition) Overview

Mining the Web: Discovering Knowledge from Hypertext Data ReviewExecutive summary: This is a fabulous book, written with care and
precision, easy to read yet covering in detail a wide variety of
the most beautiful and promising developments in data mining and
machine learning as it relates to the World Wide Web, including a
prescient vision of where the field is headed in the future.
More detail: There are science authors who are clear experts in
their field, yet have trouble communicating their knowledge. Then
there are science authors who write with clarity, but achieve it
by dumbing down technical details to cater to a broad readership.
Finally, there are authors who are experts and leaders in their
field, who are actively contributing to the forefront of research,
who are excellent writers, and who can communicate complex
concepts to a diverse audience with acumen, without glossing over
important details. Soumen Chakrabarti is one such author. "Mining
the Web" is a stunning achievement. It is an excellent summary of
the past decade or so of research in the area, covering nearly all
of the important bases, including the machinery of Web crawling,
Web information retrieval (i.e., search engines), clustering,
automated classification, semi-supervised approaches, social
network analysis, and focused crawling. Though Chakrabarti himself
has contributed prominently to the field, this book is not at all
the vehicle for self-promotion that other specialist texts
sometimes feel like. The book should be valuable to newcomers,
students, and experts alike, and could certainly serve as an
excellent course textbook. High-level concepts can be grasped with
little mathematical background, yet more technically sophisticated
readers will not be disappointed: most topics do include rigorous
coverage. The text is well organized, well written, and well
conceived. It's design, including generous and illuminating
figures and illustrations, possesses an artist's touch, perhaps
not surprising given that Chakrabarti designs his own font
libraries in his (apparently scant) spare time. It's hard to
imagine where Chakrabarti found the time to write such a
comprehensive and thoughtful book, but I'm not asking any
questions: I'm thrilled with the outcome. The book is a must-have
reference for anyone working in -- or aspiring to work in -- the
crossroads of Web algorithmics, data mining, and machine learning.

Coolhunting: Chasing Down the Next Big Thing Review
This book was a tough read. When I finished it I asked myself "Why did I read it?" And I asked myself "What did I get from it?" I know I read it thinking there would be some good insight provided into how to identify trends and trendsetters so a reasonably quick profit could be made by jumping on the bandwagon. And now that I have finished the book I know that I certainly didn't get what I was looking for.
As far as I am concerned, the book uses too much of its own terminology and has to spend too much time defining terms. And the authors cite too many names and specific instances instead of smoothing over all of that and telling a simple easily digestible story. The title of the book is "Coolhunters." And that is fine. But why was there so much coverage of "Coolfarmers" in the book. That was a sideshow, and should have been left out in my humble opinion.
Basically I learned that coolhunters are seekers of trends and trendsetters. A coolfarmer is a leader of trendsetters. Swarm creativity is creativity resulting from a collective mindset. And Collaborative Innovation Networks (COINs) are teams of trendsetters who share ideas, information, and work in order to produce swarm creativity. Then social networks are cited as an example of some COINs. But so what? I still need to have all this pulled together for me so I can recommend the book to someone interested in starting a business or make their business better. I can't do that!
This book had 10 chapters as follows:

Kinship, Networks, and Exchange (Structural Analysis in the Social Sciences) ReviewThis book gathers 15 contributions written by the most distinguished international scholars in the field of kinship. It provides an extensive view on methodological and theoretical advances in kinship studies, as well as several in-depth case studies that illustrate how those methods and concepts might be applied.
One main strength of the book is to present a perspective that is at the same time formal (with an emphasis on mathematical concepts and measures), and historical. In other words, unlike many quantitative kinship studies, those papers are respective of the richness of ethnographic information, and do not dismiss the peculiarities of contexts or time periods. Quite to the contrary, actions and decisions regarding kinship are seen as "embedded in specific nexus of social relations" (p. 1). Houseman and White, for instance, in their reanalysis of Leach's classical study on Pul Eliya, are able to show how matrimonial alliances are explained by a theory of practice grounded in the circumstances of the material environment and the social network (p. 83), which are historical in nature. Considering social constraints as emerging interactional realities enables the authors to defy structural determinism, while keeping the project of scientific explanation.
Conceptual and methodological advances are numerous. Duran Bell's article, for instance, suggests to reinterpret bridewealth, dowry and marriage exchange, in relation with corporate groups, and provides an interesting alternative to an analytical perspective in which reciprocity is the elementary unit of social action. One methodological advance that will undoubtedly excite people interested in kinship is the PGRAPH kinship graph, developed by Douglas White, one of the editors, along with Paul Jorion. Unlike conventional genealogical graphs, PGRAPH considers couples as nodes, and individuals as edges, thus providing a very straightforward representation of the kinship space, that enables one to discover relational structures, in cases where conventional genealogical graphs are of very limited help. The software producing PGRAPHS can be downloaded from Douglas White's home page.
In addition to the presentation of methodological and conceptual advances, readers will enjoy reading fascinating case studies, ranging from Papua New Guinea, India, to Mediterranean communities. The text is easily absorbed, the software is free, and the datasets are there. Many guides on Social Network Analysis (SNA) seem like they are written for someone who already knows how to do SNA. The original Pajek manual is one example (Pajek is pronounced pai-yak). This book is like the missing manual. It guides the novice carefully through the analysis process. The free software, Pajek, is one of the best Social Network programs currently. Although Pajek was initially just for visualizations of large networks, and it still only has a subset of the UCInet functions, the algorithms are fast and plentiful. This book is the best in the field, as a reference for those formally trained in the discipline or a self-instruction manual for those who really want to use SNA methodology. It's well written; but the mathematical and combinatric underpinnings of SNA won't make for light reading. This books stands out among others in that each subject area is thoroughly documented and cited for further reading and examples of application, and that the base algorithms are provided for most SNA techniques - useful if you want to learn how to "do" instead of just run a software package, or want to program your own. This is about the combination of explicit and implicit organizational networks and how organizations should consider evaluating, re-defining these organizational networks to maximize organizational performance.
It will help you understand how *your* organization is actually functioning, the drawbacks that hinder your personal performance because of organizational network bottlenecks, and suggests models for improved organizational performance.
Organizational performance is related to getting the level of collaboration just right. You may be surprised to learn that the problem might not be too little collaboration but too much of inefficient collaboration.

Social Network Analysis: A Handbook ReviewAs a biostatistician interested in learning some social network analysis, I was immediately attracted to this book. It is short and non-technical and seemed to provide an overview of the key issues in this research area. Once I began to read it, I quickly saw that Scott has a gift for presenting complex idea in clear prose. (I don't know quite why it is, but British academics are typically very good at expository prose.) In any case, Social Network Analysis provided just what I wanted -- a quick (180 page) overview that will help me move on to other, more technical works in this area.
