Marx, Durkheim, Weber: Formations of Modern Social Thought ReviewThis is one of the most dull readings I have ever come across as a college student. Now, this may be due in part to the subject matter, but the style of writing is what really drags this book down. I have three problems with this book: first, that every paragraph seems to begin the same way. It makes it very repetitive and easy to be distracted while reading it. Second, the author, in his attempt to simplify things and explain them, generally adds a plethora of absolutely non-essential information that not only adds to the sheer volume of material to sift through but also can very easily confuse the reader, even more so than the author's original text. Third, everything he explains he explains in lists exactly such as this! I cannot tell you how hard it is to keep focus on something when the author sounds exactly as disinterested in the material as the student may or may not be to begin with.
As a side note, I have done well in my theory class in which I have to use this text, but due in almost no way to this text. Maybe it is helpful for some, but I find it an absolute bore to read, and I have talked with many, many others who feel the same. Theory does not have to be utterly boring!

Making Sense of Social Theory ReviewI am not a studnet of sociology or social theory. So, I am always in search of simple, concise books that explain major works. This is one of the best I have found. With my background in computer science and Mathermatics, I didn't have any problem following the arguments and examples in this book. Mr. Powers, makes social theory really easy to follow with plenty of examples and explanation. The books is concise, but includes the basic points required to understand the theory. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to get started on sociology and social theory.Making Sense of Social Theory Overview

Identity and Control: How Social Formations Emerge (Second Edition) ReviewThis book is only for academics.
I have tried to read the 1st edition several times, but it is a full time job for a couple of weeks. Really. The author is intelligent and wellknown in the field, so it might be worth it. But as a prospective buyer of the book you should know what to expect.
I bought the 2nd edition hoping the language would be clearer. It might be slighly clearer, but there are also changes that add further confusion. It is not clear when the author has changed his opinion from the 1st edition or when he just tries to express himself differently. This point is however only relevant for those who have tried to get through the 1st edition.
With time this book might become a sociology classic, but not before we start seeing other work directly interpreting what is being said in the book. That has not really happened yet. Azarian The General Sociology of Harrison C. White: Chaos and Order in Networks has written one interpretation, but it only deals with a few aspects of this book.Identity and Control: How Social Formations Emerge (Second Edition) Overview

Networks of Innovation: Change and Meaning in the Age of the Internet ReviewA short book, written from the perspective of a research interested in the links between "Technology" and "Society". To me the book was worth reading if only for its focus on two insights.
a) Innovation is about social change. A new product, a new technology, that does not provoke changes of behaviour will end up just being a foot note in some academic record. Socially irrelevant.
b) Radical innovations tend to appear in the intersection between disciplines. Specialized organizations produce incremental innovations. Radical innovations require a more open environment. The history of the development of Internet, covered in the book, is a good example.
A quick read, non academical.
