Marx, Durkheim, Weber: Formations of Modern Social Thought ReviewThis is one of the most dull readings I have ever come across as a college student. Now, this may be due in part to the subject matter, but the style of writing is what really drags this book down. I have three problems with this book: first, that every paragraph seems to begin the same way. It makes it very repetitive and easy to be distracted while reading it. Second, the author, in his attempt to simplify things and explain them, generally adds a plethora of absolutely non-essential information that not only adds to the sheer volume of material to sift through but also can very easily confuse the reader, even more so than the author's original text. Third, everything he explains he explains in lists exactly such as this! I cannot tell you how hard it is to keep focus on something when the author sounds exactly as disinterested in the material as the student may or may not be to begin with.
As a side note, I have done well in my theory class in which I have to use this text, but due in almost no way to this text. Maybe it is helpful for some, but I find it an absolute bore to read, and I have talked with many, many others who feel the same. Theory does not have to be utterly boring!
-A rather perturbed student.Marx, Durkheim, Weber: Formations of Modern Social Thought Overview

Making Sense of Social Theory ReviewI am not a studnet of sociology or social theory. So, I am always in search of simple, concise books that explain major works. This is one of the best I have found. With my background in computer science and Mathermatics, I didn't have any problem following the arguments and examples in this book. Mr. Powers, makes social theory really easy to follow with plenty of examples and explanation. The books is concise, but includes the basic points required to understand the theory. I would recommend this for anyone who wants to get started on sociology and social theory.Making Sense of Social Theory Overview

Stigma ReviewThe Stigma book is the most thorough and outstanding book about ostracized/abused categories of people. It deals with the attitudes and treatment of the mentally ill;of homosexuals; of the obese; the ...developmentally handicapped; the old; and those belonging to minority races. It further describes resentment against achievement; the stigma of homelessness, that of prostitutes and folks who suffer from addictions including alcoholics. It describes how brutally criminals, xconvicts and former offenders are stigmatized and denigrated throughout the years of their lives. It is a must reading for all students of psychology, sociology and other human service professionals.Stigma Overview

Social Support and Physical Health: Understanding the Health Consequences of Relationships ReviewI read this book for a class I took, and it was very easy-to-read and understand. There are several viewpoints that are included which contributed to a more global view of the literature. It is a book I think everyone should read, especially students of medicine, the social sciences and especially those studying and working in public health. It is an interesting and thought-provoking book, and the author, Uchino writes so clearly, and poses questions that make sense, and causes a person to really think of how important social support can be in any person's life at any stage, and at any age. I was so happy to have had the opportunity to read it, and understand the need for social support in life, and how that impacts one's health.Social Support and Physical Health: Understanding the Health Consequences of Relationships Overview

Generative Social Science: Studies in Agent-Based Computational Modeling (Princeton Studies in Complexity) ReviewJosh Epstein's new Opus is a landmark publication in the emerging field of multiagent-based simulation of dynamic social systems. Since Josh is not only one of this still nascent (though burgeoning) field's ablest and most creative practitioners, but also among its most thoughtful critics, the reader of has two treats in store: (1) a generous, and wide-ranging, sampling of case studies (including social networks and evolution, population growth, emergence of economic classes, civil unrest, timing of retirement, the dynamics of adaptive organizations and the spread of infectious disease), and (2) a cogent "meta" discussion of what multiagent models ARE, ARE NOT and how (when their properties and limitations are *not* properly taken account of) they can easily be MISAPPLIED.
Far from suggesting that multiagent-based models are a panacea solution to all (or most) social dynamical systems, Josh's book carefully articulates the conditions for which such an approach IS (and is NOT) appropriate; an approach rarely taken by other, similar, overviews of the field. Indeed, the cogent philosophical discussion in Chapter One - alone! - in which the generativist's position is defined and put into a broader modeling/simulation context, is worth the price of admission; I have not seen a better "manifesto" of multiagent-based modeling elsewhere.
Finally, without taking away any of the inherent "beauty" (in the technical sense) of the often exaggerated concept of "emergence," Josh succeeds admirably in both defining the term, and de-mystifying it, stripping it of some of its unnecessary "quasi-mystical" baggage (at least as it is often portrayed in lay publications).
Anyone who is interested in understanding how agent models may be used to help explore the dynamics of social dynamical systems, should have this book firmly on top of their "must read" list! Josh has generously provided future generations of agent explorers their go-to source of both inspiration and ideas. Well done Josh!Generative Social Science: Studies in Agent-Based Computational Modeling (Princeton Studies in Complexity) Overview

The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement ReviewIn this book, New York Times columnist David Brooks takes on the audacious endeavor of weaving together a unified picture of the human mind through various discoveries from the sciences. Oh ya, and it's all presented in the context of a story about two fictional characters, Harold and Erica.
You can get a good feel for the topics he covers from the chapter titles:
1 - Decision Making
2 - The Map Meld
3 - Mindsight
4 - Mapmaking
5 - Attachment
6 - Learning
7 - Norms
8 - Self-Control
9 - Culture
10 - Intelligence
11 - Choice Architecture
12 - Freedom and Commitment
13 - Limerence
14 - The Grand Narrative
15 - Metis
16 - The Insurgency
17 - Getting Older
18 - Morality
19 - The Leader
20 - The Soft Side
21 - The Other Education
22 - Meaning
If you think that's a lot of chapters, you're right on target. It's a pretty thick book at 450 pages, but it's easy to move through (not quite novel easy, but much more so than typical nonfiction).
Book's strengths:
- If you are familiar with Brook's social commentary (and like it) you won't be disappointed, but this isn't the real strength of this book.
- In a style that's reminiscent of Malcolm Gladwell, Brooks offers a pop view of experimental psychology that is downright fascinating. The studies he explores are the real meat and merit of this book, and they expose many fallacies in the way we think that we think. Here are a few of the topics:
* The hidden role emotions play in making decisions.
* How mirror neurons in the brain are wired to mimic the person we're talking to.
* The massive role non-cognitive skills (aka, other than IQ) play in success, fulfillment, and achievement.
Book's weaknesses:
- My biggest criticism of this book is that the author created characters to personify the characteristics he wants us to understand. Allow me to explain. This is fine in theory but in practice (for him anyway) it falls flat compared to the entertaining and poignant explanations he writes when he isn't trying to explain through a character.
- As for the story itself, the narrative isn't as flat as your typical non-fiction fiction book (aka management fables and parables of other stripes), but a juicy, page-turning novel it is not. You'll get into the story enough at times that you'll want it to be a page turner, but it's too flat for that.
- I wish the book would show you how to use non-cognitive skills to your advantage. Emotional Intelligence 2.0 is a great book for this. The Social Animal: The Hidden Sources of Love, Character, and Achievement Overview

Social Support Measurement and Intervention: A Guide for Health and Social Scientists ReviewI am someone interested in social support theory and measurement. This book is a standard resource for me and each chapter is well-written and up to date. A personal favorite of mine is the Wills and Shinar review of different support measures. This is a must own for researchers in this area but also individuals interested in support processes.Social Support Measurement and Intervention: A Guide for Health and Social Scientists Overview
