Smart World: Breakthrough Creativity And the New Science of Ideas Review
Although we recognize and appreciate the importance of the human mind's capability for breakthrough creativity (e.g. DNA, printing with movable type, the personal computer), Richard Ogle acknowledges, "the mental processes that led to them have remained largely beyond our grasp. Where do truly innovative ideas come from, and how does the mind make the leap to embrace them? What role do existing cultural and social factors play? Above all, what are the primary mental faculties involved in creativity, and how do they work?" These are among the questions to which Ogle responds in this volume. His objective is to provide "a theoretical and practical account of achievements that before were generally regarded as the unfathomable products of genius." He succeeds brilliantly by forging "a deep connection between the discoveries concerning discontinuity made in the emerging science of networks, the imaginative processes underlying creative leaps, and the law-governed dynamics of a networked model of idea--spaces in the extended mind."
Ogle has identified nine laws of network science, any one or combination thereof that can explain creative breakthroughs. For example, "The Law of Tipping Points": Under certain critical conditions, order arises out of disorder. Malcolm Gladwell devotes an entire book, The Tipping Point, to examining how relatively insignificant factors can have profound impact. In scientific terms, this is the concept of "phased transitions" or, as Thomas Kuhn describes them in The Structure of Scientific Revolutions, "paradigm shifts." Ogle offers several examples that illustrate how tipping points within the process of phased transitions "violate what scientists used to think of as a fundamental principle of physical systems: that there is a direct, quantifiable relationship between cause and effect."
After I read this passage in Ogle's book (pages 79-95), I set the book down, located my copy of Jacob Bronowski's The Origins of Knowledge and Imagination and reviewed the passages I had highlighted. Although there are no references to Bronowski in Ogle's book, I think this brief excerpt from it helps us to increase our understanding of how we see and make sense of the world is "deeply shaped by the framing that, consciously or not, we unavoidably bring to bear." Bronowski asserts that "even the perception of the senses is governed by mechanisms which make our knowledge of the outside world highly inferential. We do not receive impressions that are elemental. Our sense impressions are themselves constructed by the nervous system in such a way that they automatically carry with them an interpretation of what they see or hear or feel."
Recall Ogle's observation noted previous that "the mental processes that led to [various creative breakthroughs] have remained largely beyond our grasp." However, there have been some recent developments ("profoundly important advances") that have increased our understanding of those processes. One is the emerging science of networks. It suggests that pattern formation is not random. "Its newly discovered laws have led to two highly significant insights regarding creativity. First, the networks of the extended mind, like all dynamic networks, are self-organizing; they drive their own transformation, thereby enabling the intelligence embedded in the idea-spaces of our smart world to provide a vast and potent external source of creative energy and ideas. Second, the, the human mind's imaginative faculties not only actively piggyback on these dynamics, deriving much of their creative power from them, but turn out to be themselves driven by universal network laws." In other words, the space of ideas "thinks" for each of us.
This is by no means an "easy read." Many will need to re-read it (as did I) to absorb and digest Ogle's rigorous examination of what is indeed "the new science of ideas." He offers several specific strategies that enable his readers to conduct their own examination of that science. When concluding his book, he offers this encouragement: "trust your imaginative faculties as they surf embedded webs of intelligence near and far, and have the confidence that if you're up for the ride, the space of ideas, shaped by the laws of network dynamics, will do most of the hard thinking for you."
Those who share my high regard for this book are urged to check out the aforementioned books by Kuhn and Bronowski as well as Albert-Laszlo Barabasi's Linked: How Everything Is Connected to Everything Else and What It Means, Andy Clark's Natural-Born Cyborgs: Minds, Technologies, and the Future of Human Intelligence, Albert Borgmann's Holding On to Reality: The Nature of Information at the Turn of the Millennium, Gerald M. Edelman's Bright Air, Brilliant Fire: On the Matter of the Mind and his more recently published Second Nature: Brain Science and Human Knowledge, and The Ten Faces of Innovation: IDEO's Strategies for Defeating the Devil's Advocate and Driving Creativity Throughout Your Organization co-authored by Thomas Kelley and Jonathan Littman.Smart World: Breakthrough Creativity And the New Science of Ideas Overview

Here Comes Everybody: The Power of Organizing Without Organizations ReviewI was modestly disappointed to see so few references to pioneers I recognize, including Stewart Brand, Kevin Kelly, Joe Trippi, and so on. Howard Rheingold and Yochai Benkler get single references. Seeing Stewart Brand's recommendation persuaded me I don't know the author well enough, and should err on the side of his being a genuine original.
Certainly the book reads well, and for someone like me who reads a great deal, I found myself recognizing thoughts explored by others, but also impressed by the synthesis and the clarity.
A few of my fly-leaf notes:
+ New technologies enable new kinds of groups to form.
+ "Message" is key, what Eric Raymond calls "plausible promise."
+ Can now harness "free and ready participation in a large distributed group with a variety of skills."
+ Cost-benefit of large "unsupervised" endeavors is off the charts.
+ From sharing to cooperation to collective action
+ Collective action requires shared vision
+ Literacy led to mass amatuerism, and I have note to myself, the cell phone can lead to mass on demand education "one cell call at a time"
+ Transactions costs dramatically lowered.
+ Revolution happens when it cannot be contained by status quo institutions
+ Good account of Wikipedia
+ Light discussion of social capital, Yochai Bnekler does it much better
+ Value of mass diversity
+ Implications of Linux for capitalism
+ Excellent account of how Perl beat out C++
Bottom line in this book: "Open Source teaches us that the communal can be at least as durable as the commercial.

Web Data Mining: Exploring Hyperlinks, Contents, and Usage Data (Data-Centric Systems and Applications) ReviewSo what does the author, Bing Liu know about Web data mining to write the book "Web Data Mining - Exploring Hyperlinks, Contents, and Usage Data"[1] ? Fortunately the answer is "a lot!" This fact along with the title which had some cosine similarity with the names of my research lab and a graduate course that I have been teaching at the University of Louisville since 2004, and prior to that at the University of Memphis since 2000, are the reasons why I ordered a copy of this book. Bing Liu is a well seasoned researcher who has made significant contributions to association rule mining, in particular classification using association rule mining and association rule mining with multiple supports. He has also worked on Web data extraction, and more recently on opinion mining. In addition to the expertise of the author, two of the chapters, Chapter 8, Web Crawling, and Chapter 12, Web Usage Mining, were contributed by two leading experts in these respective areas, Filippo Menczer for the former and Bamshad Mobasher for the latter.
This book is appropriate for students at the graduate or senior undergraduate level, for practitioners in industry, and even as a good comprehensive reference for researchers in academia.
The Table of Contents held a surprise for someone who had always found it hard to limit the number of textbooks to one book in a web mining course that does not have data mining as prerequisite, and thus typically prescribes a good data mining book to introduce data mining techniques, in addition to a second book related to web mining. This book, on the other hand, has two parts, one devoted to data mining, and the other devoted to Web mining. While it was not a problem to find a very good data mining book (I have a few of them on my bookshelf), it was harder to find a book that addressed data mining and Web mining. It was also hard to find a good and comprehensive Web mining book, since most of them tend to focus on one or only two of the three main Web mining areas of Web structure, content, and usage mining (typically leaving Web usage mining in the dark, with just a small section, citing that it is an emerging area). This book, on the other hand, is a serious book on Web mining that also devotes a decent portion to data mining. I would describe the way the topics are presented as deep and rigorous enough in most chapters, which is in contrast to a large number of books on data mining and web mining. That said, because the book is full of simple examples that illustrate the methods being discussed, it is useful even for beginners, making it also appropriate for an introductory level course.

I have mixed feelings about this book. On the one hand, it is coherent, thoughtful, and tells a story about the emerging science of networks that anyone, who can read, can understand. This is a non-trivial accomplishment, so 4 stars.
However, the book is also--being brilliantly designed to be understood by the lowest common denominator, an undergraduate--somewhat shallow and empty.... especially when compared with Stephen Wolfram's "A New Kind of Science", 1197 pages not counting the index, which is at the other extreme.
Although there are good notes, there is no bibliography, and the author fails to use network methodology to illustrate and document the emerging literature on networks--called citation analysis, this would have been a superb appendix to the book that would have taken it up a notch in utility.
Among the key points that the author discusses and which certainly make the book worth buying and reading, my above reservations not-with-standing:
1) Reductionism has driven 20th century science (and one might add, all other knowledge), with the result being that we have experts who know more and more about less and less--and )as CIA and FBI recently found)while leaving us devoid of generalists and multi-disciplinary artists and scientists who can "connect the dots" across these fragmented foci.
2) Contrary to the prevailing wisdom about networks being equally distributed and thus largely invulnerable to catastrophic meltdown, the author does a fine job of documenting the importance of selected "hubs", so important that their removal ultimately breaks the network down into isolated pieces. The functionality of the network, its strength, is also its weakness--vulnerability to deliberate attack against the hubs (the author does not mention the Internet domain directories except in passing while discussing a table error, but MAYEAST and MAYWEST would be two obvious directory hubs that could be better protected through replication).
3) The author inadvertently makes a vital contribution to our understanding of how to defend America against terrorism--discussing why no single authority can close down the Internet by fiat, he notes "The underlying network has become so distributed, decentralized and locally guarded that even such an ordinary task as getting a central map of it has become virtually impossible." LOCALLY GUARDED--this is the key phrase. Federalizing counter-terrorism, and using federal agents and computers at the state and local levels, will not be effective against terrorists in civilian guise within the homeland--only a complete extension of counterintelligence and counterterrorism methods to the state & local level--teaching them to fish for terrorists, rather than trying to catch the terrorists with federal trawlers, is the way to go.
4) The author flirts with what is known as nomadic computing, making the point that nodes built around individual people are becoming as important--some would say more important--in a networked economy than nodes built around static organizations. There is a useful general discussion of how "fitness" in a networked economy is a combination of speed and scalability as well as diversity of linkages. As a general rule, as the FBI found (and also CIA, INS, and the State Department), systems with a single hub resistant to initiative from the field offices will tend to be slow and ineffective.
Missing from this populist overview is a discussion of the vital importance of geospatial information. While the author helpfully notes the Earth is increasingly covered by an electronic "skin" with millions of measuring devices, with experts predicting that by 2010 there will "around 10,000 telemetric devices for each human on the planet" (one suspects this refers only to privileged humans, not the billions of dispossessed that lack telephones, never mind computers), he does not take the next essential step, which is to note that in the absence of an XML-GEO standard and a global push to associate geospatial as well as temporal tags with all data, much of what we collect will, like the trillions of bits we have collected with secret satellites, never get processed in a meaningful manner.
This is a helpful book that will be of value to the general reader at the elementary (adult) level.

Social Network Analysis: A Handbook ReviewAs a biostatistician interested in learning some social network analysis, I was immediately attracted to this book. It is short and non-technical and seemed to provide an overview of the key issues in this research area. Once I began to read it, I quickly saw that Scott has a gift for presenting complex idea in clear prose. (I don't know quite why it is, but British academics are typically very good at expository prose.) In any case, Social Network Analysis provided just what I wanted -- a quick (180 page) overview that will help me move on to other, more technical works in this area.
