The Leader's Journey: Accepting the Call to Personal and Congregational Transformation ReviewI was honored to do some editing work on this book. The book is primarily an application of Bowen family systems theory to the Christian life. Its target audience is Christian leaders in that the anecdotal evidence is drawn from leaders' lives and the results are applied to congregational settings.
One important message for leaders is that the important elements of Bowen family systems theory --seeing systems instead of merely looking for simple cause and effect, identifying one's own habitual responses to anxiety and conflict, disciplining one's self to be a present, calm, loving influence in the midst of conflict, etc.-- are essential components of the leaders toolkit. I believe that done properly, as acts of surrendering control to Christ and choosing to love others unconditionally, the material in this book comprises some new spiritual disciplines.
I believe that this book is important for several reasons:
* It is one of the most articulate, secular or Christian, explanations of Bowen family systems theory
* It explains the theory in the context of Scripture and Christ; frankly, it is only in Christ that we can have the hope of truly being free to love and free from the influence of our anxious world
* It recognizes that all the church growth how-to books in the world are worthless if the leader lives life reacting to others and being an anxious presence in the life of the church
* It calls the leader to take responsibility for his/her own behavior, recognizing that learning to love others will result in them learning to love, too
Leader, is their a cold war of silence going on between you and one or more of your immediate family or between you and one or more of your church leaders or parishioners? Are you engaged in a power struggle with somebody else in your family or church? You need to read this book. It will help you to take responsibility for your part and to develop a capacity for choosing to love others even in the midst of conflict.
While the target audience is Christian leaders, this book will benefit anyone, particularly any Christian. For we all lead in some way, whether that is just in a family setting or some responsibility in our jobs. Billions of Drops in Millions of Buckets: Why Philanthropy Doesn't Advance Social Progress ReviewIt's familiar argument repackaged: Too many non-profits doing similar things via low performing ways while spending too many resources vying too little money to go around. The answer: with performance driven metrics - Goldberg's IMPEX) - the "crowd" will invest in the best performing ngos on the basis of their "performance."
It is an interesting idea. However, the IMPEX presumes that, before donors give their money to an ngo, they want to evaluate all ngos with the same metrics always looking to the one that most efficiently, cost effectively, and on the largest scale delivers their service irrespective of other motivations (religion, social circle, guilt, desire to give back, etc.).

I have to ask...with the explosion of social media, available information, giving circles, philanthropy advisors, etc. can't wise philanthropic investors determine if the charity he/she gives to is performing? Mr. Goldberg asserts that his idea would diminish the `strings' often attached to philanthropic dollars. I disagree. The IMPEX evaluation tool simply changes the type of strings. Instead of a name on a building, a pet program or dinner with a celebrity the strings simply become the metrics chosen for the IMPEX.
Maybe the argument is familiar because the system has worked pretty well for a long time and new players, in the ngo territory, like Mr. Goldberg, simply feel compelled that the 3rd Sector should look and feel more like the 1st and/or 2nd Sector territory with which they are familiar.

Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewIf you work with a nonprofit as a staff member, volunteer or board member, you already know that nonprofit management is not as easy as it looks. The authors of this book agree. They studied nonprofits, the third largest industry in the U.S., for four years and identified 12 "exemplary" organizations that share six similarities in best practices.
Habitat for Humanity, Teach for America, The Heritage Foundation, Share Our Strengths and eight other nonprofits made the list. This helpful study also dispels six myths about effective nonprofits. Example: not all organizations are perfectly managed, have brand-name awareness, or breakthrough new ideas. They don't wordsmith their mission statements, they live them. And--they're big on implementation and execution (my favorite.)
Read chapter one and you'll have the gist of the whole book, especially the six practices: 1) Advocate and serve, 2) Make markets work, 3) Inspire evangelists, 4) Nurture nonprofit networks, 5) Master the art of adaptation, and 6) Share leadership. The best nonprofits realize it's not about egos and logos.
The authors intentionally excluded religious organizations and churches from the study (a flaw, in my opinion since The Salvation Army and others have much to teach us). But you'll benefit from these new insights. Many nonprofits will especially appreciate learning how these exemplary organizations turn volunteers into evangelists.

Social Media for Social Good: A How-to Guide for Nonprofits ReviewI follow Heather's blog and find her ideas very useful. This book seems to bring together most of her ideas in a very tight and well organized book. It is easy to find an idea and put it to use. Many of these ideas are in her blog, but this is so much easier for those who are beginners or advanced beginners with social media. I recommended it to several folks who won't go looking through blogs for answers,but who would find a book easy. So many ideas, I get inspired and start writing down my own adaptations and how I can make these ideas work.
