Nonprofit Guide to Going Green ReviewI was very happy to see that the author focused on events, with contributions from someone I imagine is the world's most experienced green events professional, Georgia Malki of Seven Star Events ([...]). I was also very happy to see that this book went beyond the "tips and tricks" approach to "how-to" that is so common today. In the end, the key is to have a realistic plan with the means to implement. The Nonprofit Guide to Going Green gives shallow and deep-end swimming lessons on each major piece of an NPO EMS plan.Nonprofit Guide to Going Green Overview

Young World Rising: How Youth Technology and Entrepreneurship are Changing the World from the Bottom Up (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) ReviewYoung World Rising is undoubtedly one of the best books that I have read in years. This book is a very good read for anyone trying to decipher changing dynamics of demographics, technology and globalization and how these factors are creating new opportunities for poor young world and the old world economies. It opens up your mind as it explores how the next generation's approaches and capabilities of addressing 21st centaury challenges are different and unique. Young World Rising, unravels how new digital global economy is allowing anyone with a breakthrough idea, strategy, and great business model to succeed, irrespective of their background and location. The author, Rob Salkowitz, gives numerous inspirational examples of social/individual entrepreneurs from Ghana, Colombia, Argentina, Philippines and India that have found their ways in the global economy and are successful examples to follow today, such as a story of Suhas Gopinath, who became the youngest member of World Economic Forum at age of 21 by building Web sites for businesses in the U.S. (started his business at age 14 from a Cybercafe)!
Another case study that intrigued my interest is of three entrepreneurs from the mountains of coffee-growing region of Colombia, who created an innovative touch-screen display to enable visually-impaired students to experience online educational material. The solution was not developed in any high-tech corporate lab. Instead, it was created by students, who are generally expected to start a family and grow coffee, as a prototype for a thesis in computer science. These stories not only give hope but also reiterate that age and place is no barrier to innovation.
I thought this book is a very good read for global executives, who are looking to penetrate the BOP markets. Also, there are many fascinating theories and statistics that suggest why China is not part of the Young World Rising discussion (which was very interesting to read) while elaborating on what are the forces that are reshaping the world. Salkowitz explains in his book that the "Old World" and the "Young World" are not necessarily in competition - they each need each other to make sure the human race can survive as we hit the peak planetary population of ~10 billion by mid-century.
The book is full of interesting information and point of views that you would not find in any of your typical news sources; YWR is among one of those books that you can't really put down, but when you do, you come back for more really quickly. I strongly recommend this book to anyone, really enjoyed reading it a great deal!.Young World Rising: How Youth Technology and Entrepreneurship are Changing the World from the Bottom Up (Microsoft Executive Leadership Series) Overview

Forces for Good: The Six Practices of High-Impact Nonprofits (J-B US non-Franchise Leadership) ReviewIf you work with a nonprofit as a staff member, volunteer or board member, you already know that nonprofit management is not as easy as it looks. The authors of this book agree. They studied nonprofits, the third largest industry in the U.S., for four years and identified 12 "exemplary" organizations that share six similarities in best practices.
Habitat for Humanity, Teach for America, The Heritage Foundation, Share Our Strengths and eight other nonprofits made the list. This helpful study also dispels six myths about effective nonprofits. Example: not all organizations are perfectly managed, have brand-name awareness, or breakthrough new ideas. They don't wordsmith their mission statements, they live them. And--they're big on implementation and execution (my favorite.)
Read chapter one and you'll have the gist of the whole book, especially the six practices: 1) Advocate and serve, 2) Make markets work, 3) Inspire evangelists, 4) Nurture nonprofit networks, 5) Master the art of adaptation, and 6) Share leadership. The best nonprofits realize it's not about egos and logos.
The authors intentionally excluded religious organizations and churches from the study (a flaw, in my opinion since The Salvation Army and others have much to teach us). But you'll benefit from these new insights. Many nonprofits will especially appreciate learning how these exemplary organizations turn volunteers into evangelists.

The New Pioneers: Sustainable business success through social innovation and social entrepreneurship ReviewThe subtitle for The New Pioneers is `Sustainable business success through innovation and social entrepreneurship'. So when I picked up the book, I thought it would focus away from the concepts of corporate responsibility and more on the social entrepreneurs who are demonstrating a new way to do business. This did not turn out to be completely true.
Tania Ellis has divided her book into two parts. `New ways, new needs' sets the framework for sustainable business by talking about the existing paradigms and how they are driving a new force for change. The second part - `New needs, new solutions' focuses on the paths to sustainable business, telling the reader about the new approaches that have been adapted and providing a range of example from which to learn.
In part one, Ellis takes the reader through a whole range of material, covering the whole of the current thinking in the sustainable business field. This part of the book is also full of examples of successful big and small businesses and their approach to their work. Ellis talks about corporate responsibility as well, but provides a clear understanding of what social entrepreneurship is, including the different approaches to defining this relatively new concept.
In part two, the author focuses on the changing world and what this means for the traditional CSR community. She outlines the arguments that have been made for Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility, rather than Social Responsibility as well as for Corporate Social Innovation. She also outlines the four Cs of sustainable innovation - clear purpose, corporate engagement, collaborative co-creation and clear communication.
Perhaps the one negative point of the book is that it is rooted in the present. If a reader picks it up in 3-4 years, he or she may be hard pressed to set the context and remember the details of the financial crisis and other current events to which the author often refers.
All in all, The New Pioneers is an excellent first book to read if you're relatively new to the idea of sustainable business and social entrepreneurship. It's also great to read as a repository for real-world examples of innovative business practices. You can also get a taste of what the book holds by looking at the author's website and blog - [...]

The Social Entrepreneur's Handbook: How to Start, Build, and Run a Business That Improves the World ReviewNon- profit organizations number in the thousands and while some of them have become quite large and powerful, each started with an individual or a group of people who had a vision. Many people presently have charitable visions and dream of starting a non- profit, but are not sure what to do or where to begin. This is where the Social Entrepreneur's Handbook may be able to help. Written by the CEO of FINCA International, this book is a resource guide with helpful hints and tips that cover everything from the initial setup to hiring to fund raising and beyond.
I have entertained the thought of starting and running a non- profit organization, but I was often uncertain and had dozens of questions that needed answers before I would consider taking the plunge. And now that I have read this book, I have a better understanding and respect for what the employees of a non- profit organization go through each day as they seek out donors, hire new employees, balance their books, and abide by their organization's charitable mission. The book covers most of the setup and operational process involved in running a non- profit and it lets the reader know exactly what to expect if he/she decides to try to turn a non- profit dream into reality. What I find most helpful about this book isn't just its usefulness as a non- profit setup guide, I also like that most of what it recommends can be applied to most any business. The section on hiring was especially useful because I can relate completely to some of the characterizations of employees that the book talks about. The "Destroyer" and the "Chief Destruction Officer"- two employee types talked about in the book- remind me of some of the people I worked with at my last job. I also like what the book says about interviewing and evaluating employees because this, too, can be applied to any organization.
With a title like The Social Entrepreneur's Handbook, this may seem like another boring management guide, but it is actually quite entertaining as well as informative. The author didn't write this book in the dry, often monotone style so common with most books in the management genre. Rather, he wrote the book in a very lightened- up way, with small doses of humor on most every page. Readers will chuckle many times as they come across some of the author's funny descriptions of everyday people and ordinary actions and they will appreciate how the author was able to take what many would consider a dry, boring subject and make it more enjoyable.
Starting a successful non- profit organization is no picnic, but The Social Entrepreneur's Handbook is a very useful guide to the non- profit establishment process and it is a book I am glad I took the time to read. I still don't think a non- profit organization is in my own future, but if you are one of those who aspires to a self- employed life of charity, then The Social Entrepreneur's Handbook could be just the book you need. It walks you through the process one step at a time, explaining how to create and establish a success non- profit organization and enjoy the high level of satisfaction that results from operating a business focused on charity rather than profits.

The Power of Unreasonable People: How Social Entrepreneurs Create Markets That Change the World ReviewI love the topic of course which is why I read this after already reading other similar books.
This book lays out a classification of different kinds of social entrepreneurs, ranging from pure charity to pure business. This is the strongest element of the book, since other popular books have not explicitly discussed the fact that all are possible. The book also tries to provide case studies, and indeed I took notes of things to go look up further. However the case studies are to brief and scattered to really be useful.
I found the book mildly engaging in terms of writing style. I finished it, but I also put it down a lot of times.
If you have been doing your homework in this space much of this book will be repeat, but there is enough new that its worth your time. If you are new to this space of social entrepreneurship start with either of Bornstein-How To Change the World, which is very engaging to read and provides sufficiently in-depth case studies that you feel like you learned a few examples. Another place to start might be Yunnus - Banker to the Poor, also very engaging, but focused on just one case.

The Power of Social Innovation: How Civic Entrepreneurs Ignite Community Networks for Good ReviewThis book is a must read for anyone who is interested in learning ways to help improve the country and the world. Whether you are a business leader, educator or student this book will open your eyes. It will give you hope that there are people out there who are trying to make a positive difference. The author uses real world examples, and quotes from people who have helped make changes along with those who have been impacted by the changes. I read this every night before I went to bed so that my night ended on a positive not. I recommend others do the same, especially people who have the desire to make a difference, but feel discouraged because of the current state of the country and what is shown on the news.
The best part about this book is that the language is easy to comprehend. You don't have to be in politics or urban studies to understand what the author is saying. He writes the solutions in a clear and concise manner. Once again this is a must read for anyone who is interested in learning possible solutions to change the world. The Power of Social Innovation: How Civic Entrepreneurs Ignite Community Networks for Good Overview
