Acceleration: The Forces Driving Human Progress ReviewI was curious about the author's take on human progress, having corresponded with him regarding a book with a similar theme, "The Rational Optimist" by Matt Ridley. So I ordered Havelock's book.The book is a fine summary of both how, and perhaps why, life is getting better for most people as measured by most any metric that matters. Havelock diagrams how knowledge is transferred and expands from individual to individual, and group to group. I did not find this particularly surprising or earth shaking, but Havelock examines human progress and thought or meme transference in a novel way.
While I don't believe this book will replace other books about human progress like Matt Ridley's or Ray Kurzweil's, ACCELERATION is a welcome addition to the growing literature acknowledging that the pessimists about the human experience are generally wrong. The future looks like a fun and interesting place to be, and it does indeed need you.
Havelock's book encourages us, and puts additional scientific data on the table to make us feel a bit better about the future and being part of it. Utilizing data from history, aging statistics, and analyzing trends, this book will make you think about your future in a new and more positive way.Acceleration: The Forces Driving Human Progress Overview
