His interest is in party-trade union relations, but he takes migration policy as the test case, making what could have been a stolid PhD thesis into a widely applicable tale of contention over a new migration policy. He has done wide research and interviewed almost all the main players, and his book spins the reform process into a tale which will excite wonks, especially migration policy wonks. He even invents a six-component "model" for labour migration policy (gatekeepers, criteria for entry, location of job search, labour market access, permit upgrade and welfare rights). This model is could be applied to any labour migration policy, anywhere. If at times he is a bit repetitive, or overly reliant on Wuokko Knocke's 2002 book, there is little missing in this book except, perhaps, an international perspective.
