Scholarly Book Reviewing in the Social Sciences and Humanities: The Flow of Ideas Within and Among Disciplines (Contributions in Librarianship and Information Science) ReviewYlva Lindholm-Romantschuk uses book reviews published in professional journals to study the influences of one academic discipline upon another. This is the right way to study the social sciences and humanities because the book (or "monograph," to use the author's preferred term) is both a more common and a more influential mode of scholarly communication than in the physical sciences. Previous bibliometric studies focusing on analysis of journal article citations miss much of the action.The book's first two chapters overview the sociology and philosophy of science and what is known of communication between scholars in scientific disciplines. Chapter three describes the role played by book reviews in raising the visibility of certain books--and books by certain publishers--in the authors' home disciplines and elsewhere. Although not highly regarded by many who read them, book reviews play a key role in the passage of ideas between disciplines. The next three chapters outline the author's methods of defining research disciplines, identifying key journals in each, and selecting a sample of book reviews from these journals. The final chapter shifts to a case study approach and follows the influence of two specific books as traced through their reviews.
The author reaches some interesting conclusions. There seems to be more migration of ideas from social science to the humanities than vice versa. Both of these fields have disciplines that are central to the flow of ideas between the disciplines around them, such as History and Literature in the humanities and Sociology, Economics and Political Science in the social sciences. And there are disciplines like Dance and, ironically, Communications that are relatively isolated from the others. There may be time cycles in interdisciplinary communication patterns which relate to the discipline's maturity as it begins as a sub-discipline, develops its own research community, influences others, and perhaps becomes isolated, irrelevant and extinct. The author reminds us that academic disciplines are not defined by sharply-bounded bodies of knowledge. They are shaped dynamically by cultural and social factors as basic as what scholars read each others' books.
This book is certainly recommended for its target audience of researchers in the sociology of science. It is also interesting to book reviewers because it expresses knowledge and appreciation of the impact of book reviewing on the research community that distains it. The author's methods are useful to those who would study the impact of book reviewing in other arenas.
