Struggle Against the State ReviewI got this book because I am interested in social movement theory. In addition I had a general interest in differing types of social movements, and was curious about experiences from South Asia. The book did not disappoint. Besides a great literature review regarding social movement theory and mobilization, the book gives a lot of insight into two Indian states and their culture of social protest. It moreover contributes to our understanding of successful protest movements. The author presents Kerala, a protest rich state in western India in great detail providing important and interesting insight about mobilization and structure of social movements. Contrasted by the protest poor state Orissa in the east, Swain argues that part of successful protest mobilization lies with social network structures. The case studies are based on extensive surveys conducted in India by the author and complemented by extensive interviews. This data alone is reason enough to get this book.
The only downside of the book is the price. $99.95 is certainly not a bargain.Struggle Against the State Overview
